Getting Started

Before the Big Day

We recommend at least two “play dates” before your child’s official first day. During these hour-long visits, you’ll stay and play together, helping your child become familiar with our spaces, educators, and routines while discussing your child’s specific needs with our team. These visits are the foundation of our partnership in your child’s care and education.

During these orientation visits, we’ll gather important information about your child’s:

  • Sleeping patterns and any special settling techniques you use at home
Eating habits, food preferences, and any allergies or dietary requirements
  • Toileting routine or nappy changing preferences
Comfort items or special words that help them feel secure
  • Interests and favourite activities that might help them settle

At home, we encourage you to talk positively about coming to Jack & Jill to play with other children and reassure them that you’ll always come back. Familiarise your child with our educators’ names and consider establishing a goodbye routine that you can practice during your play dates.

What to Bring

  • Comfort items: Any special toy, blanket or comforter that helps your child feel secure
  • Spare clothes: At least two complete changes appropriate for the weather
  • Nappies and wipes: If applicable for your child
  • Bottles and formula: Prepared according to your child’s routine (if needed)
  • Sunhat: For outdoor play
  • Sheet set: For rest time (cot sheets for nursery, single bed sheets for older children)
  • Water bottle: Clearly labelled with your child’s name
  • Breakfast: If arriving before 8:00am, you’re welcome to bring a healthy, nut-free breakfast

Please remember to label all items clearly with your child’s name to help us keep track of belongings.

First Day Tips

Develop a consistent drop-off routine—hang up bag, put shoes away, hugs and kisses, then a confident goodbye. While it might seem counter-intuitive, quick goodbyes are often easier for children. We’ll help your child find an engaging activity and send you reassuring updates throughout the day.

Remember, some initial separation anxiety is normal. Our experienced educators are skilled at helping children settle and will contact you if your child remains distressed for an extended period. You’re always welcome to phone us to check how your child is settling.

For the first few days, consider arranging a shorter day if possible. This gradual introduction can help your child adjust to their new routine with less fatigue and overwhelm.

Staying Connected Through Our App

Our OWNA parent communication app keeps you connected to your child’s day, even when you’re apart. Through the app, you’ll receive:

  • Photos and updates of your child engaged in activities
  • Information about meals, sleep times, and nappy changes
  • Documentation of your child’s learning experiences
  • Important centre announcements and newsletters
  • Access to our weekly menus and upcoming events
  • Direct messaging with our team when you have questions
  • The ability to provide our educators with vital handover notes about your child

During those first emotional days, we make a special effort to send reassuring updates and photos showing your child settling in and engaging with activities. Many parents tell us these real-time glimpses into their child’s day provide tremendous peace of mind.

We’ll help you download and set up the app during your orientation process, ensuring you’re ready to stay connected from day one.
We understand this is a significant transition for both you and your child. Our team is committed to making your family’s journey into care as smooth and positive as possible, building the trust and security that allows children to thrive in their new environment.
